Social Work Honor Society Receives National Service Award
This outing is especially beneficial to the new students since it provides the opportunity for students to get acquainted in a relaxed social setting, plus it holds the possibility of informal exchange of information. Another benefit is that the faculty is included which affords the opportunity for strengthening faculty-student relationships. The Ohio University Chapter elects officers and plans an induction ceremony each spring. Application forms are sent to all social work students each January. Additionally, the application form can be obtained upon request from the Social Work Program, Administrative Associate. Completed nine semester hours or twelve quarter hours of required social work courses.
Alumni are formerly active student members who are no longer associated with any institution with an established chapter. They may participate in alumni activities at any school where an official Alpha Delta Mu chapter exists. A faculty member acting as the chapter’s adviser then writes a letter accompanying a petition establishing the program’s status and agreeing to follow all Alpha Delta Mu Honor Society guidelines.
Each chapter is free to develop a program to meet local needs. The National Council of Phi Alpha, the organization’s policy making body, meets once a year at the Council of Social Work Education’s (CSWE’s) annual program meeting conference. Each chapter has one voting representative on The National Council.
The Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society encourages a closer bond among students of social work and promotes humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. To qualify for induction, a student must have completed at least nine hours of social work courses and have an overall GPA that is in the top 35% of all Social Work majors in their program. Eligible students are invited to join Phi Alpha, and are recognized at the Department’s Annual Social Work Day and graduation for their excellence in scholarship. Dr. Scott Batey is the faculty advisor for Phi Alpha and may be contacted for questions about membership. In 1999, the School of Social Work chartered a local chapter, Theta Phi, of Phi Alpha, the national social work honor society.
This award recognizes outstanding service conducted by chapters.
Fulfill such additional duties as may be required by the Executive Committee or by the Chapter Constitution, Bylaws, Resolutions, or vote of the Chapter membership. Campus services and operations are open and we anticipate normal operations for the Fall 2021 semester. Must have completed at least 12 hours of social work classes.
The officers of the organization shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to be elected by a majority vote of the active chapter membership. Completed 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours of required social work courses. UAB students who wish to join the SSWO must fill out and submit a membership application .
For example, in March of they hosted a prom night-style dance at the Graham University Center ballroom for adults with physical and developmental disabilities. They also collaborated with the Counseling and Psychological Services office to raise awareness about mental health issues and, separately, organized an ongoing sock drive for the homeless. When the pandemic struck, they began hosting virtual competency-building webinars for members on topics such as cultural competency. UAB also encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans. There are many ways to get involved with others pursuing degrees in social work at NAU. You’ll meet new people, get involved, network with peers and mentors, and round out the learning that takes place in the classroom.
Membership dues for Phi Alpha Honor Society are $60, to be submitted by check with the membership application. The fee includes life membership, certificate and medallion. If the fee prohibits you from applying for membership, contact the faculty sponsor to discuss your situation. They rallied for bills in support of children, social welfare, aging persons and their caregivers, as well as those affected by mental health and behavioral issues. The charter chapters were Florida State University, Michigan State University, Ohio Northern University, Central State College, University of Dayton, and the University of Tennessee.
